Artist Statement

During my almost thirty years as an artist, the issues that motivate me have been consistent: beauty, mystery, color, form, space, and time. I describe the painting series I am currently creating as “painting combines”, intended to create a profound sense of mystery within an articulate vision, utilizing materials that reflect light, space, and the viewers themselves.

To elaborate, since color is a reflection of light that is then perceived and formulated by the viewer, each color, or combination of colors, elicits a response in the observer’s brain. The response can be psychological, emotional, and filled with subliminal meaning.

Artists seek such responses from their audience; it is what drives our work. In the mixed-media series, I am using Plexiglas materials, such as clear rods, to bend, abstract, and alter the observer’s perceptions. Each time someone sees my paintings from a different angle, however slight the alteration, the image and colors will change. This is due to the refraction of reflected light and is called the parallax effect: the apparent displacement of an object when seen from different points not on a straight line with the object.

A related avenue of exploration involves painting upon clear Plexiglas sheets and placing them within clear Plexiglas cubes. Sometimes I bend the sheets, juxtaposing them with sculptural objects within stacked, skewed cubes. This provides multiple viewing dimensions for the observer: first, a three-dimensional view of the painting combine; second, the experience of seeing themselves and their surroundings reflected within the art; third, the ability to actually see the physical reality of the space and quantum applications involved.

Thus, my painting canvasses are sculptural, experimental and innovative. The resulting work speaks both to quantum theory and the essence of spirituality. The work speaks to the now.
